What to wear to an Indian wedding

An Indian wedding is usually a few events, not one, and each has its own mood. If you've never been to one, the dress code can feel like a puzzle. I've been to plenty, so here's my simple guide.

Event 1

Mehndi and haldi

Daytime and relaxed. Bright yellows, greens and florals, in something easy to sit on the floor in. Skip anything you'd be sad to get a little turmeric or henna near.

Event 2

Sangeet and cocktail night

The dancing night. Sequins, shine and colour. A sharara or an Indo-western set is perfect, and a statement designer dress fits right in.

Event 3

The wedding ceremony

Go traditional and colourful: a saree, lehenga or anarkali. Bridal red is usually left for the bride, and some families avoid all-black or all-white, so if in doubt, pick colour. At a gurdwara, bring a scarf to cover your head.

Event 4

The reception

The most glamorous night. A rich saree or lehenga, or an elegant floor-length designer gown.

Good to know

The fine print, kept short

How long can I keep it?

4 days. It arrives the day before your event and goes back the day after. Need longer? 8 days is available on request.

Is there a bond?

Yes, $100 for every outfit. It's refunded in full within 2 days of the outfit coming back in good condition.

Can I try it on first?

Yes, if you're in Sydney. Try-ons are by appointment in Chatswood. Just message me.

What if it doesn't fit?

Message me within 12 hours of it arriving and I'll swap it for another available outfit in your size (you cover any extra postage).

Can I take a back-up?

Yes. Add a second outfit for $25, wear one and return the other unworn. If you wear both, the full hire applies to the second.

Do I need to clean it?

No, cleaning is on me. Please don't wash, iron or steam it. For creases, hang it in a steamy bathroom.

What if I return it late?

Ask me before your return date and you can usually extend at 10% off. Late returns without an extension are $20 a day, taken from the bond.

Can I get a refund?

The hire fee is non-refundable once your booking is confirmed, because I hold the outfit for you and turn other renters away. If plans change, message me early. If the outfit doesn't arrive in time because of me, you get the hire fee back in full.

Can I buy a dress?

Most pieces can be bought. Just ask and I'll give you a price.

How do I pay?

Once I've confirmed your date, you pay the hire and bond by card or PayID to lock it in.
